  • The Elephant in the Room

I have a confession to make. I struggle to believe that a stay-at-home mom (to a toddler, no less) can truly live a Spirit-filled, abundant life.

    There, I said it.

I didn’t even realize this was part of my mentality until a little over a week ago, when I was reading chapter two of Priscilla Shirer’s book, One in a Million, while I waited for my annual checkup with my obgyn.

The chapter started with an anecdote about a time that Priscilla and her family went to the circus. As they were exiting the circus that evening, they saw an elephant behind a fence enclosure and stopped their car to stare at it for awhile. The youngest son asked why the elephant didn’t just run away when all that seemed to be stopping him was a flimsy fence. As they continued to admire the strong creature, they realized that something else was really keeping the elephant in bondage. His leg was chained down by a shackle to two bolts.

Priscilla went on to explain what she later discovered about circus elephants. Elephants are chained as babies when they are being trained to be part of the circus. At this young age, they are not yet strong enough to break free, so they eventually stop trying.

By the time they are grown, they are strong enough to escape their chains. Nonetheless, they have grown used to them and no longer try. They have settled for a life of less.

The chapter compared the circus elephants to the Israelites on the cusp of freedom from Egyptian slavery. It also compared the elephants (and the Israelites) to those of us who live in the modern-day world. We, too, have our bolts to break.

As I continued to read the chapter and to note what kept the believer from experiencing true abundance of life, a thought occurred to me.

You don’t believe you can truly live an abundant Spirit-filled life as a mom, do you?

It was more of a statement than a question. The answer was obvious to me, and I knew that this mindset was a bolt that needed to be broken in order to live the life God had intended for me. After all, how was I to live the abundant life at this stage of life if I didn’t even believe it was possible?

The subtitle for this blog came as a result of my thoughts that day, because even though my heart struggles to believe that I can live a Spirit-filled, abundant life as a stay-at-home mom, I know in my mind that God doesn’t exclude anyone from the opportunity to live such a life. To me, it’s a matter of reciting the truth and praying that God will let it sink down deep into my heart.

Lately I have been imagining Jesus right beside me in this journey. It helps a lot. It makes me realize how He is eager to be a part of every moment of my parenting. It matters to Him, and He can teach me more about Himself through it and make me more like Him as a result.

I’m finding myself having to address this bolt in my life a lot, this one that would have me to believe that it is too hard to live an abundant, Spirit-filled life in the midst of temper tantrums, messes, and plans gone awry. But I don’t want to be like the circus elephant. I don’t want to settle for a life of less. And I don’t have to. I have the Holy Spirit to reveal to me any chain in my life, and I have His Word to remind me of the truth. For this reason, I will continue to battle these thoughts day after day until I have broken free.

    The Adventure Begins…

He has been inviting me on a journey all along…

It finally feels like Fall here. The air is crisp and chilly, and even though I live in the desert where the leaves don’t change colors and fall, a couple of days ago I had an image in my mind for much of the day of a narrow, well-worn dirt path nestled between lush trees in various hues of red, orange, and yellow. And as I looked at this scene, I sensed God whispering into my heart, beckoning me to go on an adventure with Him.

I am pleasantly surprised by the prospect. I wasn’t expecting this, although I know I should have been as I look back over the past months of this year. He has been inviting me on a journey all along, but because of painful circumstances months prior, I had been unwilling to go on it with Him. The events that shrouded the beginning of this year made me fearful and doubtful, and they made me question if I could trust God’s goodness fully. These thoughts began a personal tug-of-war with God with my fists clenched tightly around any semblance of control I had left and tugging for more.

Much of this year has been spent that way, with more circumstances arising to show me how little control I have. And yet I have tried to hold onto and control whatever little thing I could despite it all.

But God has been so patient with me. He has continued to speak to me through books and Bible studies I have been reading of women who have been on their own spiritual journeys much longer than I have, and He has been reminding me of the life He has intended for me all along—one filled with His Spirit and overflowing with abundance. And so today He has extended the invitation once again, whispering it deeply into my soul. Will you go on an adventure with Me?

Although I have waited so long to respond, the invitation is still the same, with only perhaps a change in scenery to allow for this season (most literally) in which I find myself.

I could see a few leaves fall lazily to the ground in my mind as I pondered the image of that day once again. Although it was a cloudy, chilly mid-afternoon in my thoughts, there was something so cozy about the beginning of this journey. Perhaps it was the warmth I felt as I waited in anticipation for what was ahead. But even more so, it must have been knowing that the LORD had gone before me and was going with me. He had prepared this journey for me to the very last detail, and He would take delight in showing me what all He had in store for me. After all,

“No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.”

    I Corinthians 2:9 ESV

As I begin this adventure, I have decided to “take along” this blog with me. Recently I was reading in my Bible study about how important it is to remember what God has done for us throughout our lives. This blog is my monument—my way of remembering what God has done for me as I look back on what I’ve written here in the years to come. I can’t be certain what all this blog will entail, but I look forward to discovering what all God has in store and eagerly await to share the insights and events this adventure holds for me right here. This will be my monument of praise to the very One who is orchestrating all that is to come.

  • Welcome to my blog

Living the Spirit-filled life as a stay-at-home mom

Picture of me in a corn field

Hi, I’m Colleen James, and starting a blog is something I have wanted to do for awhile. I love to write and figured I should put that passion to use somehow.

I originally thought I’d start a food blog since the blogs I mainly look at are ones in search of some good recipes for dinner! I can get caught up in these websites for hours if I’m searching for new recipes at night when my young son is already tucked into bed. The dreamy pictures of these hearty meals is enough to make me want to jump into the lives of these bloggers. They seem so perfect!

I had originally planned to call my blog “A Cozy Haven.” It would include recipes, DIY projects, and perhaps some interior decorating ideas–everything that makes a cozy haven! I was praying about what to call my blog prior to coming up with this perfect name, however, and in the midst of these thoughts, God interrupted my plans to call me on an adventure with Him.

For that reason, I have chosen the name “Anticipating Adventure” to document this new season of my life on my spiritual journey.

I must admit that I still hope that I’ll be able to include some recipes and DIY projects, but I am praying that the LORD will make me flexible to His plans for this blog.

Writing a blog like this definitely feels more risky to me than posting about recipes would have. There is something very personal about documenting this journey before me through this platform. But that is part of the adventure, isn’t it?

Thank you for traveling down this road with me. I look forward to seeing where it will lead and can’t wait to see the adventure God has in store!

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.”
